Olympr: turning SkillSelect data into a usable dashboard
Olympr is a live data dashboard for Australian skilled migration. Why we built it, what it does, and what it taught us about data products.
Australian skilled migration data is public, but it is scattered across government pages and hard to act on. Invitation rounds, points cut-offs, state nomination rules and occupation lists all live in different places, in different formats. People planning a visa end up building their own spreadsheets.
Olympr pulls that data into one place. It is a web dashboard that tracks visa trends and invitation rankings, calculates PR points, plans grant timelines, explores state nomination data and analyses occupation demand, all from SkillSelect data that updates automatically.
The hard part of a data product is rarely the charts. It is the plumbing: getting source data in reliably, cleaning it, keeping it fresh, and showing people what changed without making them read a table. Most of the work on Olympr went into that layer.
The second lesson is about scope. A migration tool could try to answer every question. Olympr answers the handful of questions people ask most, clearly, and links out for the rest. That keeps it fast and keeps it accurate.
Olympr is live at olympr.site. It is also the clearest example of the kind of data dashboard we build for clients: messy public or internal data in, a clean tool people actually use out.
